Nityānanda was an an extraordinary teacher. In fact, it’s hard to call him a “teacher”. When he was alive, he was a guru to thousands and thousands, but he “taught” very little, in fact he barely spoke. His presence was his teaching. His state was his message.
He was a being totally immersed in the Divine, and his very presence was a contagious transmission of this state of oneness.
It is believed that yoga first emerged in India around 5000 years ago. I think of Nityānanda as sort of culmination of those 5000 years of teachings and practice. People who knew him from a young age believed that he was a janma-siddha; a being who was born fully awakened. Perhaps before his incarnation he completed his spiritual work in another body. From a very young age, Nityānanda appeared to be a being who radiated “God energy” wherever he went.
As spiritual aspirants found him and took refuge with him, he was able to guide their spiritual work and helped many to attain liberation.
Still now, more than 60 years after he left his physical body, Nityānanda’s presence radiates. Although I never met him, I consider him my Beloved Guru.
I believe his energy is a perfect “medicine” for the times we’re living in.
His presence is unity.
His presence is connectedness with Source.
His presence is pure unconditional Love.
His presence is wisdom which transcends philosophy, religion, and logic.
For serious sādhakas (spirtual aspirants) he provides the gurutattva - the energetic principle of the guru - a crucial element for anyone who wants to make real progress on the path.
