I showed up at the time of the appointment for President Trump. I was there to do a private session with him - some meditation, some spiritual advising, what we call a “half-and-half”.
I don’t see him regularly because of his schedule, but he schedules with me whenever he can. We were at one of his private residences. He was busy multitasking taking care of guests, signing papers and delegating tasks to aids and assistants when I went up to him and spoke in a fake spiritual person voice “Good afternoon Mr. President, are you ready to awaken?” He gave me a wry smile and went on filling glasses of water with lime slices for his guests. I told him I would do the whole session in that voice if he wanted me too. We have a playful relationship - we’re both Geminis born on June 14 after all! I woke up before the session actually began.
This is a recurring dream. I dream that he has brought me into his life to help and I am more than willing. Usually when I think of him or anything about him I get major heebie jeebies, but when I have this dream I always wake up feeling love.
Just imagine if he had someone like me in his camp.
Just imagine if we all did.
Meditation is an essential practice, but I don’t just teach people to meditate. Most of the people I work with already know how to meditate or already know they don’t want to meditate because they hate it. (If they hate it we fix that right away).
I do give people really effective enjoyable practices to do, but I also offer spiritual advising. I am not a yoga philosophy teacher really - I’m more of a yoga psychologist. The teachings of yoga aren’t really meant for academic conversations. They are meant to help us be more alive, more free and yes (say it in a spiritual voice) - awaken.
The teachings and practices are all about transforming our experience of being human.
Those of us who are here with a purpose in life - especially an important one - NEED to have spiritual practices to help us heal and be stronger and freer, and we also need to have spiritual teachings and principles to live by.
Those of us who are going through a difficult passage in life, or who are trying to turnaround a dark moment in our life MUST have resources to help them not just feel better or distract themselves, but create transformation, create new life.
The Three S Words
Tony Robbins (I know, I know) has an elegant way of articulating it. He says we need to change three things to make a transformation. They all start with S:
Our State
Our Stories
Our Strategies
In a nutshell, this is what I do for people.
Strategies alone won’t work. No matter how much good coaching we get about new ways to do things, we won’t actually do them unless we’re able to change what’s happening below the surface.
We can go on and on working and re-working our stories in therapy for years. It can be therapeutic to be heard and change our narratives sometimes, but without having access to new states of consciousness or concrete ideas for new ways to act, not much happens.
State changing practices too - breathwork, meditation, chanting, psychedelics - they are incomplete and become addictive unless they are combine with new ways of being and new narratives and language around who we are and how we are.
Maybe you have all the time in the world. Most of us don’t. Most of us are busy and many of us are in stages of life where we KNOW we won’t live forever and the time is now or never to get doing what we’re here to do, and healing what we need to heal.
I’m back from my sabbatical in India and ready to go. We’re doing a fabulous four week course on the Eight Limbs of Yoga, a cool retreat on the East Coast, a little tour in the Midwest, and we’re getting our Advanced Training together for this Spring.
And in the meantime, I am taking on new clients for private training work.
